What an operations audit actually finds

Not a list of software to buy. The same six patterns turn up in almost every business we look at. Here is what we are really hunting for, and which one to fix first.

"Audit" sounds like someone shows up with a clipboard and a list of things you are doing wrong. That is not this. An operations audit is a map. We follow the work through your business the way a customer or a dollar actually moves through it, and we mark every place it slows down, doubles back, or waits on one person.

And after enough of them, you stop being surprised. The same six patterns show up in almost every business we look at.

The six patterns we find in almost every business

  1. Everything runs through you. The owner is the single point every decision and exception routes through. Nothing moves without a sign-off, so work piles up behind one person.
  2. It lives in someone's head. How the work actually gets done is not written down anywhere. It walks out the door at five, and for good when that person leaves.
  3. Every job gets done differently. No shared process, so the result depends entirely on who happened to pick it up that day.
  4. Work dies in the handoff. The gaps between people are where things fall through, get found late, and get fixed in a panic.
  5. People do robot work. The same task, the same way, every week, done by hand by someone far too expensive to be doing it.
  6. You are flying blind. No clear view of what is working and what is not, so problems are only visible once they have already cost you.

None of these are moral failings. Every growing business grows its way into them. The point of naming them is that each one has a known fix, and they are not equally urgent.

You leave with a decision, not a deck

The output is not a forty-page report you never open again. It is short: here is where it is bleeding, here is what it is costing, and here is the one pattern worth fixing first. Sometimes the fix is software. Often it is not. And sometimes the honest answer is that you are running fine and should keep your money.
